Bangladesh had a big collapse in their batting, which helped Sri Lanka take an early lead in the series with a comfortable 77-run win in the first ODI at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday (July 2).
Sri Lanka batted first but did not have a good start. They lost three wickets for just 29 runs in 8 overs. Pathum Nissanka was out for zero, Nishan Madushka was bowled, and Kamindu Mendis was also out without scoring. However, Kusal Mendis played well, hitting some boundaries, and captain Charith Asalanka also started playing attacking shots, including a six and some fours, helping Sri Lanka reach 50 runs in 10 overs.
Kusal and Asalanka had a good partnership, adding 60 runs before Kusal was out for 45, just five runs short of his fifty. Asalanka kept scoring, reaching his fifty in 61 balls, while Janith Liyanage supported him well, and they added 50 more runs together. However, Bangladesh broke this partnership when Liyanage was caught at long-on.
Even after losing partners, Asalanka kept playing positively, hitting sixes and fours, and had a useful 39-run partnership with Milan Rathnayake before Rathnayake was bowled for 22. Wanindu Hasaranga then came and scored a quick 22 runs with three boundaries, but he was dismissed by Taskin Ahmed, who also took the wicket of Maheesh Theekshana.
Asalanka reached his fifth ODI hundred but was out in the final over, and Sri Lanka finished with 244 runs in 49.2 overs. Taskin Ahmed took 4 wickets, and Tanzim Hasan Sakib took 3 wickets for Bangladesh, helping them stop Sri Lanka below 250.
When Bangladesh started their chase, their openers Parvez Hossain Emon and Tanzid Hasan began well, hitting six boundaries in the first five overs. However, Emon got out for 13 trying to hit a big shot. Tanzid continued to play well, hitting a four and a six, and scored a 51-ball fifty. With Najmul Hossain Shanto, they had a steady partnership of over 70 runs.
Then the collapse happened. Shanto was run out while trying to take a second run. After that, Hasaranga took two wickets in the same over, getting Litton Das out for zero and Tanzid out with a great catch by Liyanage. Towhid Hridoy was bowled, and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz was out lbw soon after. Kamindu Mendis then took two more wickets in the same over, and Bangladesh went from 100/1 to 105/8, losing seven wickets for just five runs.
Tanvir Islam and Jaker Ali tried to fight back, adding 20 runs together, but Theekshana ended their partnership. Jaker Ali then hit some sixes and fours, trying to keep Bangladesh alive and reached his fifty in 59 balls while managing most of the strike.

Sri Lanka was even given a five-run penalty for starting an over late, but it did not affect the result. Hasaranga ended Jaker’s innings by trapping him lbw, and Bangladesh was all out for 167 runs in 35.5 overs, losing the match by 77 runs.

- Bangladesh: 167 in 35.5 overs (Tanzid Hasan 62, Jaker Ali 51; Hasaranga 4/10, Kamindu Mendis 3/19)
- Result: Sri Lanka won by 77 runs.
